Today, Haryana is poised for a tightly contested election as over 2 crore voters prepare to cast their ballots for 90 members of the state assembly in a single-phase poll. This election will significantly impact key political figures, including Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, athlete Vinesh Phogat, and JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, among 1,027 other candidates.
The BJP is facing strong opposition as it seeks a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to reclaim power after a decade in the opposition. Additionally, regional players like the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), which was allied with the BJP until early 2024, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, are also competing for influence in the potential government formation.
Polling is scheduled from 7 AM to 6 PM across 90 constituencies. Voters will have access to 20,632 polling stations, with notable participation expected from 8,821 centenarians.
The Congress party is building on its recent success in the Lok Sabha elections, presenting a manifesto with seven key guarantees, including a legal commitment to Minimum Support Prices (MSPs), a caste survey, and a monthly allowance of ₹2,000 for women. Rahul Gandhi is leading the campaign, addressing pressing issues such as the Agniveer scheme, farmers’ protests, and the wrestlers’ agitation against the BJP.
In 2014, the BJP, riding the Modi wave, won 47 seats, marking its first government in Haryana with Manohar Lal Khattar as Chief Minister. Currently, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is optimistic about the BJP’s development initiatives over the past decade, asserting that Haryana has become a “developed state” under their leadership.
A total of 1,031 candidates are contesting this election, which includes 101 women and 464 independents.
